Come to Puur Terschelling for a beautiful outdoor ride. High up on the warm back of a Friesian or Shire horse, you will feel complete freedom—especially by the sea, with the fresh wind and the sound of the waves. A beach ride is a dream for many riders, and we love making dreams come true! Our rides (lasting two hours) take you across the beach and through the island’s natural landscape. It’s more than just a ride; we create a true Puur experience. First, you’ll have a look around the yard. After the ride, you can unsaddle your horse yourself. We offer a personal ending with a warm or cold drink.

Vrijdag:
Op vrijdag vertrekt u om 09:55 uur met de veerdienst vanuit Harlingen en arriveert u rond 11:55 uur op Terschelling.
Vanaf de haven neemt u de elektrische fietsen en fiets je naar Oosterend, onderweg kunt je bij de plaatselijk horeca lunch waarbij de fietsenverhuurder het bagagevervoer verzorgt naar Oosterend.
Rond 15:00 uur arriveert u op ons Puur erf, waarna we van 16:00 tot 18:00 uur een buitenrit maken.

Friday:
On Friday, you depart at 09:55 by ferry from Harlingen and arrive on Terschelling around 11:55.
From the harbour, you collect the electric bikes and cycle to Oosterend, while the bike rental company takes care of the luggage transport.
Around 18:30, you arrive at our Puur yard, after which we go on an evening outdoor ride from 19:00 to 21:00.
We round this off with marshmallows and a Terschelling drink by the open fire.

Saturday:
On Saturday, we go on a 3-hour outdoor ride to the Boschplaat from 09:00 to 12:00, and in the afternoon a 2-hour outdoor ride from 16:00 to 18:00.

Sunday:
On Sunday, we finish with a 2-hour outdoor ride from 09:30 to 11:30, after which you cycle back to the harbour by electric bike.
The ferry departs at 15:30 for Harlingen, arriving around 17:30.

Zondag:
Op zondag sluiten we af met een 2 uur durende buitenrit van 09:30 tot 11:30 uur, waarna u per elektrische fiets teruggaat naar de haven.
De veerdienst vertrekt om 15:30 uur richting Harlingen, met aankomst rond 17:30 uur.

All outdoor rides take place through the dunes, the forest, the cranberry fields, and along the beach.

Beginners ride at a walk and a little trot, while more experienced riders can enjoy walk, trot, and canter on Friesian horses or Shires.

Groups consist of a maximum of six people, and we kindly ask you to arrive 30 minutes before the start.

Monday:

On Monday, you depart at 15:30 by ferry from Harlingen and arrive on Terschelling around 17:30.

Once you arrive at our Puur yard, you can settle in at your own pace and enjoy your first introduction to the horses and the surroundings.

Tuesday:

On Tuesday, your adventure begins with a 3-hour outdoor ride to the Boschplaat from 09:00 to 12:00.

Along the way, you ride through dunes, forests, cranberry fields, and along the beach, with both beginners and experienced riders following a route suited to their level.

In the afternoon, you can relax or explore the island further at your own leisure.

Wednesday:

Wednesday is a free day to explore the beautiful island on your own.

Feel free to ask us for tips on the best walks, cycling routes, or hidden spots on Terschelling, so you can make the most of everything the island has to offer.

Thursday:

On Thursday, a 2-hour outdoor ride is scheduled from 13:00 to 15:00.

Friday:

On Friday, we take a longer ride from 13:00 to 17:00 to the Drenkelingenhuisje, a unique and special location on the far eastern side of the island.

Saturday:

On Saturday, a scenic evening outdoor ride is planned from 19:00 to 21:00.

The evening ride concludes at our Puur yard by the open fire, where you can roast marshmallows and enjoy a traditional Terschelling drink.

This makes for a cosy and unforgettable end to the day.

Sunday:

On Sunday, if you feel confident and have gained sufficient experience during the previous Puur outdoor rides, you can take part in a 2-hour bareback ride from 16:00 to 18:00.

This unique experience offers an extra sense of freedom and connection with the horses.

Monday:

Monday is the final day of the package.

After breakfast, you check out before 10:00 and depart by ferry at 12:30, arriving in Harlingen around 14:30.

Dinsdag:

Dinsdag begint uw avontuur met een 3 uur durende buitenrit naar de Boschplaat van 09:00 tot 12:00 uur.

Onderweg rijdt u door duinen, bossen, cranberryvelden en over het strand, waarbij zowel beginners als gevorderden een route op hun eigen niveau rijden. In de middag kunt u ontspannen of het eiland verder verkennen op eigen gelegenheid.

Woensdag:

Woensdag is een vrije dag, waarop u zelf het prachtige eiland kunt ontdekken.

Vraag ons gerust om tips voor de mooiste wandelingen, fietsroutes of verborgen plekjes van Terschelling, zodat u optimaal kunt genieten van alles wat het eiland te bieden heeft.

Donderdag:

Donderdag staat een 2 uur durende buitenrit gepland van 13:00 tot 15:00 uur.

Vrijdag:

Vrijdag maken we een langere rit van 13:00 tot 17:00 uur naar het Drenkelingenhuisje, een unieke en bijzondere plek helemaal aan de oostkant op het eiland.

Zaterdag:

Op zaterdag staat een sfeervolle avond buitenrit gepland van 19:00 tot 21:00 uur.

De avondrit wordt afgesloten bij ons Puur erf bij het open haardvuur, waar u marshmallows kunt roosteren en kunt genieten van een traditionele Terschellinger borrel. Zo sluiten we de dag op een gezellige en onvergetelijke manier af.

Zondag:

Op zondag kunt u, indien u zich vertrouwd voelt en voldoende ervaring heeft opgedaan tijdens de eerdere Puur buitenritten, deelnemen aan een 2 uur durende buitenrit zonder zadel van 16:00 tot 18:00 uur.

Deze bijzondere ervaring geeft een extra gevoel van vrijheid en verbondenheid met de paarden.

Maandag:

Maandag is de laatste dag van het arrangement.

Na het ontbijt checkt u uit voor 10:00 uur en vertrekt u met de veerdienst om 12:30 uur, met aankomst in Harlingen rond 14:30 uur.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a ride last?

Puur Terschelling offers various horse back ride. The duration ranges from 1 hour (private only) to 2, 3, 4, or 5 hours. We also organize full moon and evening rides.

Can I borrow a riding helmet?

Yes, the riding helmet is included in the price. You can borrow a helmet free of charge in sizes 49 to 66.

Do I ride alone or in a group?

You can ride individually (private), in a group, or in combination with a private covered wagon. Group rides are suitable for both beginners and advanced riders. At Puur Terschelling, you ride in small groups of up to 6 guests—ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Upon request, we also offer rides for private groups of up to 7 or 8 guests. Mixed skill levels can ride together, provided the beginner-level ride is chosen, where no galloping takes place.

What clothing is recommended?

Long trousers and closed shoes are required. Each saddle is equipped with safety stirrups. They provide comfort and ensure that your foot cannot slip through the stirrup.

Is the use of a GoPro allowed?

Would you like to capture great footage with your GoPro? It is only allowed when attached with a separate strap to your helmet. For safety reasons, a chest mount or any other type of attachment is not permitted.

What equipment is used?

Almost all Puur horses are equipped with an Australian stock saddle with safety stirrups during the rides. This saddle offers excellent comfort thanks to its soft foam padding. The knee blocks also provide a safe and stable riding position. This type of saddle is lightweight, durable, and easy to maintain.

What about animal welfare?

At Puur Terschelling, the health of our horses comes first. Our horses are ridden by guests almost every day. We aim to do this responsibly, ensuring the horses are not overburdened. That is why each rider is matched with a horse based on their weight. Smaller horses can carry up to a maximum of 90 kg. The Shire horse, one of the largest horse breeds in the world, can carry up to 120 kg. When mounting, we always use a mounting block. This helps reduce strain on the horses’ backs. Every rider, whether beginner or advanced, uses the Puur mounting platform.

Does a ride always go ahead?

There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. That’s why our rides always go ahead, as horseback riding is an outdoor experience. Rain gear is available and can be borrowed from us. If temperatures rise above 30°C in summer, we take a break between 12:00 and 16:00. Only in case of thunderstorms will we reschedule a ride in consultation with you.

Herd of Friesian horses

At Puur Terschelling, everything is family—and that includes our herd. We breed our own Friesian and Shire horses; their withers height ranges from 1.50 to 1.80 metres. Foals grow up within the herd, where each horse knows its place. In turn, we know our horses inside out. They are trained consistently, with great care and respect, making them reliable horses. They live together as a herd out in the fields. We consciously choose to maintain a closed herd, meaning no horses are brought in from outside. This creates calm and trust.

Trail rides

A horseback ride is a unique experience—especially on Terschelling. Within just a few kilometres, you’ll ride along the North Sea beach, through dunes and forests, and past the island’s cranberry fields. When riding outdoors, a whole new world opens up to you. In a natural environment, a horse feels completely at home. The scents and sounds, the sea water or soft forest ground beneath their hooves—this is what horses truly love. Our riding route is deliberately varied, so you can enjoy the island’s nature together.

Tips

Riders of different levels can ride together in a group, as the beginner level is suitable for everyone. Would you still like to canter? Then book an advanced ride at your own level!
Do you take riding lessons at home and are unsure about your level? Ask your own instructor for advice!
There is a big difference between a beginner and an advanced rider. We believe that those who fall in between these levels should continue practising a bit longer in an arena or outdoor riding area (enclosed space). After three years of weekly lessons, you are ready for the Puur advanced ride.
