Donkey walks on Terschelling: a fun outing for the whole family!

The best way to explore Terschelling on foot with children? Go for a walk with the island’s only donkeys. Each Puur donkey can carry one child (up to 8 years old) on its back. The adults and other children can walk along together. Our donkeys are not only friendly, but also very smart. They know the route through the dunes and across the beach like the back of their hand. They can carry either a child OR a picnic basket, so you can enjoy a picnic in the island’s natural surroundings.

How long does a donkeytrail?

We have mapped out a route of approximately 6 kilometers. You can take a relaxed walk and stop along the way for a picnic or have something to eat at the beach pavilion Heartbreak Hotel. This activity takes about 2 to 2.5 hours. Of course, you can choose a shorter walk if you feel this is too long.

Is a child allowed to sit on the donkey?

Our donkeys are perfectly fine with that! They are fitted with a saddle so your child can sit safely. Only one child (up to 8 years old or 1.30 meter) is allowed to ride the donkey at a time.

Can we head out on our own?

After a short introduction and getting acquainted with the donkey, you can set off. You will receive a route map, and the route is marked with donkey pictograms. Our donkeys are calm and reliable, so it is safe to go for a walk without Puur supervision.

How do I bring my food and drinks along?

The donkey can carry either a picnic basket OR a child for you. You can borrow a backpack or rent a wagon.

For little ones, a donkey walk is great fun, but also a bit exciting. That’s why we start with a short introduction rather than setting off straight away. The children can first get used to the cute donkeys. Our donkeys love being cuddled and are happy to be brushed. Has everyone become friends and feels comfortable? Then the adventure can begin. Our donkey walk is a wonderful Terschelling outing for the whole family. At a relaxed pace, you walk through dunes, nature, and along the North Sea beach. Our tip: bring a well-filled picnic basket, find a nice spot, and enjoy!

Puur Practical

You can choose a route of up to 6.3 or 6.8 km (shorter is also possible).
On average, the walk takes about 2 to 2.5 hours.
The donkeys are calm, gentle, and not easily startled.
One child per donkey is allowed, or the donkeys can carry your picnic basket.
Hot drinks can only be brought along if you carry them yourself. If a thermos flask leaks, it could cause burns to a donkey.
For safety reasons, children are required to wear a helmet (these can be borrowed from us).
You can also rent a wagon or a child carrier from us.
