Wetterskip Fryslan

Puur Terschelling works closely with Wetterskip Fryslân to manage the easternmost Wadden Sea dykes of Terschelling. This collaboration is of great importance for the island's safety, as the dykes protect the land from flooding and the influence of the sea. Thanks to joint efforts, these flood defences remain strong and reliable, which is crucial for both residents and the preservation of the unique Wadden Sea area.

Management and maintenance

Within this partnership, we provide winter and summer grazing of the dykes with our sheep, amongst other things. This keeps the vegetation in balance and prevents erosion. We also support Wetterskip Fryslân with maintenance work and supervision, ensuring the dykes remain in optimal condition. Through this practical contribution, we combine traditional landscape management with professional water management.

Safety and nature in harmony

Our collaboration with Wetterskip Fryslân demonstrates that safety and nature can go hand in hand. Whilst the dykes maintain their primary function as flood defences, the area remains a habitat for birds and other flora and fauna. In this way, we contribute to a sustainable and resilient Wadden Sea area, where both ecology and protection against high water are central.
