Staatsbosbeheer

Puur Terschelling has been working closely with Staatsbosbeheer for over 20 years, the organisation that manages a large part of the nature on Terschelling. This partnership forms an important foundation for our business operations. We share the same vision: preserving, protecting and making nature accessible. Through this shared responsibility, we can organise our activities in a sustainable way, where respect for flora, fauna and landscape always comes first. It is precisely this collaboration that ensures visitors can experience the island in an authentic and responsible manner.

Experiencing nature

A large part of our Puur activities takes place in nature reserves managed by Staatsbosbeheer, including the UNESCO World Heritage site the Wadden Sea and the European nature reserve de Boschplaat, which is also recognised as a Dark Sky Park. Think of our covered wagon tours and outdoor rides, where we take our guests through dunes, salt marshes and vast landscapes. Along the way, the Puur guides, coachmen and companions tell stories about how the area was formed, the dynamics of wind and water, and the special plants and animals that live here. By working within clear agreements and guidelines, the impact on nature remains minimal whilst visitors can simultaneously enjoy peace, space and a pure island experience to the fullest.

Active nature management

Our collaboration extends beyond just recreation. During the winter months, we actively contribute to nature management through winter grazing in the dunes. Our animals help maintain the openness of the landscape, prevent scrubland encroachment and promote biodiversity. This natural management perfectly aligns with Staatsbosbeheer's vision and ensures that the dune area retains its character and ecological value. It's a wonderful example of how traditional use and modern nature management complement each other.

Sustainable land use

Additionally, we lease various plots of (nature) grassland on the Grië and heathlands from Staatsbosbeheer. We manage these lands with care and attention, with sustainability and respect for natural processes at the heart of our approach. Through extensive use and attention to soil, water and vegetation, we contribute to a healthy and resilient landscape. This creates a natural balance where agriculture, nature and recreation complement rather than oppose each other.

Experience together, preserve together

The collaboration with Staatsbosbeheer makes it possible to show guests not only the beauty of the island, but also to tell the story behind it. During our activities, we show how nature management works and why protection is so important. This creates greater understanding and appreciation for the landscape. Together we ensure that visitors not only enjoy nature, but also feel connected to it. In this way, we work together with Staatsbosbeheer to build a sustainable future in which experiencing nature and nature conservation are inextricably linked.
